What were your feelings when you watched the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro announcing live on television that he has tested positive for coronavirus? Most of you at least must be shocked by the news, as it’s been with the person, who had downplayed the cruelty of the pandemic for many months. There was a hand-picked group of reporters on Tuesday outside his residence, Jair Bolsonaro confessed with a mask-wearing.
His words were,
“It came back positive, just you can see my face. I am doing well, “he added, “There’s no reason to fear from it. That’s life,” and “Life goes on. I thank God for my life and the role I’ve been given to decide the future of this great nation that is called Brazil. I am already taking hydroxychloroquine.”
This is an anti-malarial drug, which is unproven to effectively treat COVID-19.”
He is the second major world leader, after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who’s been affected by the virus.
Bolsonaro, 65, has frequently played down the pandemic and ignored social distancing, even as Brazil has become the second-worst-hit country after the United States. In the country, there are 1.6m confirmed cases and more than 65,000 deaths. The death toll is still rising.
Bolsonaro’s Behavior Toward The Pandemic Since Its Start In March
In the month of March, as there Covid-19 claimed its first victims in Brazil, the far-right populist or in other words socialist, used an address to the nation to sing his own praises that, if infected, he would quickly shake off the illness, and thanks to his “athlete’s background”.
Since then, he has continuously been attending social events and political rallies without wearing masks at all, or often wearing it incorrectly. Moreover, he has often been appearing in public to shake hands with supporters and mingles with large crowds without a mask. He has claimed that his history as a sportsman is going to defend him from the virus, and it would be nothing more than a “little flu” if he had ever got contacted with it.
Getting CoronaVirus, and Lung Tests
The Brazilian leader confirms that he has been taking tests for over a month, and has taken several tests, all of which were negative before Tuesday’s result. During one such scare, in March, after a trip to Florida to visit Trump, several members of the delegation with him were tested positive.
On Sunday, he said in an official meeting that he began experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, fever, and muscle pain.
He publicized Monday night that he had taken a coronavirus test and was awaiting the results, and the doctors had also taken a scan of his lungs that had come back “clean.”
Starting Treatment, After Getting Positive COVID-19 Positive Result
On Tuesday, he briefed the press that his medical team is now treating him, among other things, with hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine is the controversial anti-malaria and anti-malaria drug that both he and Trump have hyped as a means to treat and prevent COVID-19.
Trump himself even acknowledged that he had taken the drug to protect against the virus, whereas the Food and Drug Administration has warned its use for that purpose.
